We starting mixing rice into Jack’s bottle at the beginning of December and on Christmas Day, we fed him with a spoon and a bowl full of food for the first time. He took to it like a champ and since then, over the last six weeks or so, we’ve been giving him real food and introducing new foods to him all the time.
When I was pregnant, Jason and I talked about what we planned to do for Jack’s diet. Of course, for the first five or six months, he would be nursing and at some point, we knew we’d have to add in formula, which we did at about month five because of daycare. And we also talked about looking forward to feeding him “real” food. We envisioned feeding him regular food and not buying jarred baby food. Our reasoning not only revolved around money, but we figured it would be healthier to go with fresh foods. I do buy rice cereal and oatmeal at the store, but other than that, I haven’t bought a single jar of baby food.
And the most shocking part to me is how easy it is. I’m lazy. I mean REALLY lazy. And I am finding it to be really easy to make fresh delicious food for Jack. My mother-in-law gave us a Baby Bullet for Christmas, so we got it just in time to start making food. Now, don’t get me wrong, you don’t need a Baby Bullet. If you have a good blender or food processor (we didn’t,) it would work just fine. One of the things I like the most about the Baby Bullet is that it comes with a couple of silicone trays to freeze the food in, and it’s really easy to use. And it’s cute because it has little eyes and a smiley face on all the stuff. Yay!
So, anyway, the other night I took pictures while I was making food so that I could show how easy it is.
I wanted to eat acorn squash for dinner, so I just bought an extra one for Jack. I cut it in half and scooped out the seeds in the center.
For me and Jason, I scored it with a knife and put on a little butter, salt and pepper – but I just left that stuff off of Jack’s.
I then put the halves face down in a baking dish with a small amount of water in the bottom. Halfway through the cooking time, I turned them over. The sticker on the acorn squash instructed to do it that way, so I tried it. I prefer the way I usually do it, which is to cook it face up the whole time. But whatever works for you.
I let them cool off a bit, and then scooped out all the flesh and put it in the blender.
If whatever I’m making is a little too thick, I just add a little bit of water or breastmilk or formula to thin it so that it blends easier.
Then I spoon it out of the blender and put it in the handy dandy silicone tray to freeze them in little bullet shapes. The amount is about an ounce of food I think, which is perfect for how much Jack eats in one sitting. He can eat more than an ounce, but it’s a good amount of one kind of food.
And since I had my camera out like I was Rachael Ray or something, I took out a tray of peas I had previously frozen and popped them out for storage.
Then I just keep them in the freezer until I’m ready to use them and then take one out to thaw. If the consistency is thicker than I like, I just mix in some formula or breastmilk to thin it out. Not everything is frozen. When I first cook something, I keep out enough to feed fresh for a couple of days. Also, fruits like bananas and pears only make enough for a couple of days anyway and those things tend to brown as soon as you blend them up or mash them with a fork. Then, I just add in a little rice cereal to bulk it up.
Seriously. So easy. I usually only have to prepare Jack’s food once a week (not counting the fruit I give sporadically and am just mashing.) So far, he eats sweet potatoes, peas, acorn squash, yams, peas, bananas, pears and avocado. And he seems to love everything!
